Overview
Pacific Gas and Electric Company approached us with an opportunity to evolve a series of printed children’s playmats into an engaging digital experience. The goal was to retain the playful, educational intent of the original materials while expanding accessibility, interactivity, and reach through a web-based format.
My Role
I led the research and design of the interactive experience, translating static print assets into a dynamic digital product. I partnered closely with an external developer to ensure the vision was executed seamlessly from concept through launch.
Challenge
The original playmats were designed for tactile, offline interaction. The challenge was to reimagine that experience for screen without losing the sense of discovery, exploration, and fun. This required balancing usability for young audiences with performance, accessibility, and responsiveness across devices.
Approach
I began by auditing the existing playmat designs to identify core interaction opportunities and educational moments. From there, I mapped out user flows tailored to younger audiences, focusing on intuitive navigation, visual cues, and lightweight interactions. Wireframes and prototypes were developed to test how elements like tap interactions, animations, and progressive discovery could replicate the physical experience in a digital format. Throughout the process, I collaborated with development to align on technical feasibility and optimize for performance.
Solution
The final product is an interactive web experience that transforms static illustrations into an exploratory environment. Users can engage with different elements of the playmat through touch and animation, unlocking information and activities in a way that feels natural and engaging. The design maintains the visual charm of the original assets while enhancing them with motion and interactivity.
Impact
The project successfully extended the lifespan and reach of the original campaign, making it accessible to a broader audience across devices. It demonstrates how thoughtful UX and interaction design can translate physical experiences into digital formats while preserving their core intent.
